1940s

Marked by captivity in a German oflag following the French defeat of 1940, Caillard resumed painting upon his release in 1941. He turned increasingly to Brittany — Saint-Guénolé and Ouessant — finding in its granite coastline and Atlantic light a counterpoint to the warmer latitudes of his pre-war travels. These works carry a new gravity and restraint.
