Photos, documents, and archives from Christian Caillard's studio
The Studio
The Studio at 6 Rue Clauzel: A Lifelong Anchor
In the heart of Paris’s 9th arrondissement, at 6 rue Clauzel, Christian Caillard established the foundation of his artistic life. Located just steps away from the historic shop of Père Tanguy—the legendary haven where Van Gogh, Pissarro, and Cézanne once sourced their colors—this studio became far more than a mere workspace: it was his sanctuary and his compass.
For over half a century, and until the very end of his life, Caillard remained devoted to this light-filled space. It was here that he brought back the canvases "harvested" from across the globe to be refined and completed. These archival photographs capture the essence of the studio: a lived-in creative space where mementos of distant travels stood in silent dialogue with the discipline of French painting. Keeping this studio until his final days was his way of staying connected to art history while nurturing his own path of freedom.
