Description

The writer Henri Barbusse (17 May 1873–30 August 1935) had married Hélyonne Mendes, the younger sister of Huguette Mendes, Christian’s mother. Christian often visited his uncle in Aumont-en-Halatte, in Picardy. It was Henri Barbusse who gave him his first box of paints. The museum, which was once housed in this house, is currently (2026) closed and undergoing renovation. Henri Barbusse, a volunteer soldier in the First World War, was the winner of the 1916 Prix Goncourt for *Le Feu* (Diary of a Squad).
