Ouessant
The island of Ouessant, lying at the westernmost tip of Brittany, occupies a singular place in Caillard's later work. He returned there repeatedly from the 1940s onward, drawn by its desolate moorland, its storms and sudden clarities, and the particular quality of Atlantic light that changes hour by hour. These paintings distil that austere beauty into canvases of remarkable concentration.
